The Center is offering a Summer Institute for students and professionals in public health and related fields. Two courses, in the Graduate School of Public Health, and one training are being offered. Anyone may register for one or all of them. More details will be provided after registering.
Graduate Courses

EPIDEM 2165: An Interdisciplinary Course in Emerging Infectious Diseases (2 credits)
This course will provide graduate students and public health professionals with a “state of the art”, detailed, intensive, interactive and multidisciplinary exploration of current emerging infectious diseases viewed through the lens of public health practice. A broad range of topics, ranging from zoonotic infections to vaccine development to genetic testing and laboratory analysis will be examined. The course will explore the role of population increase, changes in land use, and global climate change to better understand the interaction of human, animal, and microbial populations and to help determine the most significant microbial threats over the next 20 – 50 years. It is expected that each student will bring specific personal and professional experience which will enhance the practice-based focus of the course.
HPM 2132: Emergency Preparedness Law and Ethics (2 credits)
The purpose of this course is to introduce students to emergency preparedness law. The course is designed to familiarize students with the process by which laws are created, interpreted and enforced, and to introduce them to the substantive areas of law most relevant to the field of emergency preparedness. Through web based modules, class lecture, case analysis, class discussion and student papers, six main content areas will be presented. 1) The legal framework for preparedness and response; 2) Legal duties under the National Response Framework; 3) Public Health Emergency Law; 4) The Constitutional constraints on preparedness law; 5) Employer/employee emergency preparedness issues; and 6) Liability and legal preparedness.
The two courses are offered in a format designed to be as convenient as possible for busy students and professionals. Only one week of class time at the Graduate School of Public Health is required, with the schedule as noted below:
July 7 – 11 (week 1): On-line Blackboard activities
July 14 – 18 (week 2): On-line Blackboard activities
July 21-25 (week 3): In class.
- 9 am – 12 noon for Infectious Diseases
- 1 pm – 4 pm for Emergency Preparedness Law & Ethics
July 28 – Aug 1 (week 4): On-line and final paper/project writing
Training
In addition, UPCPHP is offering two separate day-long Leadership Institutes. These are not for academic credits, however, a Certificate of Completion will be provided.
Pennsylvania Preparedness Leadership Institute
The Institute has developed a “short course” for learners with insufficient time for the full Regional or Advanced courses. Activities include skill building in the following areas: team building, multidisciplinary problem solving, meeting planning, interagency collaboration, project management, and negotiation. End results include enhanced coordination and networking between all stakeholders, application of emergency preparedness core competencies for public health workers, improved leadership skills, and enhanced public health readiness on local and statewide level.
