This innovative, interdisciplinary certificate program was created to provide students and professionals with a practical academic foundation in order to further strengthen the public health workforce and infrastructure.
Summer Institute

The Center is offering a Summer Institute for students and professionals in public health and related fields. Two courses, in the Graduate School of Public Health, and one training are being offered. Anyone may register for one or all of them. More details will be provided after registering.
Medical Students
Students spend four weeks working with the Center's staff and in the field with staff from the Allegheny County Health Department.

Learning Management System
In partnership with the Pennsylvania Department of Health (PADOH), the Center creates new courses for the PADOH "PA Prepared" Learning Management System (LMS), and obtains accreditation on previously available courses. New users can request a free username and password via e-mail to LMS@state.pa.us or by visiting www.health.state.pa.us/lms. Registered users can log in at www.pahealthinfo.net.
Internet-based Studies in Education and Research
Educational materials developed by the Center for distance learning are placed on the Internet-based Studies in Education and Research (ISER), the University of Pittsburgh Health Sciences eLearning Environment. Most materials on ISER are accredited for generally accepted Continuing Education Units and Continuing Medical Education.
New users can request a free username and password. Registered users can log in and view the Center’s courses.

Public Health Law and Ethics
This new course is being offered in Spring of 2008. Through lecture, case analysis, and class discussion students will:
- Understand the laws supporting the control and prevention of diseases
- injuries, and disabilities
- Discuss public health emergency law
- Analyze the ethical issues impacting public health practice
- Begin to develop the legal competencies needed for professional public health practice
Hepatitis A: Anatomy of an Outbreak
This online module is for Physicians, Nurses, Certified Health Education Specialists, and Certified Health Education Specialists, and Certified Food Safety Inspectors who may potentially come in contact with food-borne illnesses.
Upon completion of this course, learners will be able to:
- Describe the process of conducting a disease outbreak investigation
- Identify several methods of data collection used in an outbreak
- Recognize which agencies and departments may be involved in a large scale outbreak
- Recognize the process of trace back when a food item is determined as a source
